About "Opening Ceremonies, XXIII Olympiad 1984"
To LeRoy Neiman, these ceremonies embodied the spirit of excellence and
brotherhood with which the Olympics have been historically identified.
This event was certainly a moment to be remembered; with brilliantly
colored national flags ringing the stadium, people of all nationalities
locked arms and in unison exuberantly responded to the beauty of this
Opening Ceremony. it was also a moment in which the pride and honor felt
by these young athletes has been dramatically captured by the artist in
this image. About five days prior to the opening event, Neiman went to
the Coliseum to establish his position and do his preliminary sketched.
His was a ‘worm’s eye view,’ looking towards the eternally lit Olympic
torch and the main portals of the great arena, which also hosted the
1932 games. Interestingly, this is the only time that an Olympiad has
ever been held twice at the same place. Using his artistic license,
Neiman has portrayed the Olympic flag-bearer as an ancient Greek
athlete. Following him, carrying the American flag is an American woman
athlete, resplendent in her red, white and blue Olympic suit, with
athletes of other nations marching behind her proudly bearing their
colorful national flags.
