About "NOLA"
Follow Michael Flohr into the memories of a city as rich in culture as
his palette. In the shortened term for “New Orleans, Louisiana”, Michael
Flohr’s NOLA channels the spirit of nostalgia and personality in this
vibrant and iconic city. Michael Flohr and his wife and muse, Melissa,
share fond memories of their honeymoon together in New Orleans. Through
his art, Flohr recaptures the romantic city scenes that he will carry
with him in his memory for all time.
On this warm, rainy night,
a couple strolls slowly through the French Quarter. The bright lights
against the wet ground shoot bursts of vibrant color down each narrow
corridor. A carefully rendered composition emphasizes the tall buildings
that create the sense of being consumed in a world of one’s own. Time
stands still in a scene where love and music reverberate against the
ancient cobblestones. Impressionistic color softens his bold yellows,
blues, and reds into a soothing, pleasant combination of warm and cool
hues. So much history, so much life, the essence of this renowned city
gives meaning to Flohr’s loose, colorful brushwork.
Flohr’s genius invites those whose eyes move throughout the intricacies of NOLA to be a part of his evoked memory.
NOLA encourages the viewer to take their own loved one on an intimate
French Quarter stroll. Known to many as the birthplace of jazz and
flocked to for its world-famous Mardi Gras celebration, this
french-influenced destination offers a unique environment unmatched by
any other American city. Flohr’s fond emotions toward this incredible
urban destination create a vibe never before felt in his work.

With his parents encouragement, he began painting at the young age of five and later on pursued a degree at the San Francisco Academy of Art College, graduating in 1999. Michael Flohr has also been recognized into New York's Society of Illustrators, joining the ranks of legendary predecessors such as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish and N.C. Wyeth. Depicting ordinary moments in extraordinary ways, Michael Flohr's work displays an artistic mastery of color, perspective, technique and vision. Largely urban in content with a European flair, his paintings cover subject matter ranging from nightlife scenes, cityscapes, still lifes and figurative portraiture. Inspired by the works of master impressionists, Flohr prefers to paint in oils and comments " I love oil paint because of its durability and the richness it brings to the canvas. I also believe that most people with an appreciation for art respect an artists use of this classic medium."
